To the Editor:

Your story and editorial (“What’s the problem”) regarding Edgartown’s USPS office resonated with me. When I first became a seasonal resident of Oak Bluffs three years ago, I had several packages sent to me via Oak Bluffs USPS General Delivery. I experienced delays in receiving packages that tracking showed had been delivered, and was rudely told, “We do general delivery as a courtesy to the customer.” I was speechless. I thought my payment of postage and my federal tax dollars made me a paying customer, one who was eligible to access general delivery service at a postal facility designated to provide that service. Picking a package up at the post office is no more a courtesy of the USPS than having mail delivered to my door at my primary home. Fortunately, that experience is an exception to the nearly universal small-town friendliness I’ve experienced everywhere else on this lovely Island.
