The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League will play an exhibition game with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League at the Shark Tank on the grounds of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) on Friday, June 3. The first pitch is at 6 pm.

The game is a benefit for Vineyard Baseball Inc. (VBI), a nonprofit organization “dedicated to promote, teach, and encourage the play of baseball on Martha’s Vineyard.” The team will donate all proceeds from ticket sales to VBI, to be used for improvements to the high school field.

According to Sharks assistant coach and MVRHS head baseball coach Gary Simmons, there has been a tremendous resurgence in youth baseball participation on the Island because of the field and the Sharks.

The list of projects that VBI and the Sharks expect to complete this year include resodding the infield; repairing dugout drainage; installing a synthetic turf “collar” around home plate; installing on-deck circles with interchangeable logos (high school and Sharks); replacing permanent foul lines; rebuilding the bullpen mounds; rebuilding and extending the warning track; a new concessions area; and building bathrooms. The use of solar power is also planned for the field lights.
