The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys baseball team beat Dennis-Yarmouth for the second time this season by a score of 3-1 in an away game Monday. The Vineyard boys beat the Cape team 5-4 earlier this season.
Jacob Cardoza threw a 61-pitch 4-hitter, allowing no walks and striking out four DY hitters. Cardoza faced only five hitters over the 21 minimum in a seven-inning game, and four of his innings had 10 pitches or less against the early-swinging DY hitters. Offensively MV was down 1-0 without having recorded a hit heading to the top of the fifth when, with two outs and no one on, Elias Fhagen-Smith and Aksel Cooperrider drew walks. After both players advanced a base on a wild pitch, on a full count Nainoa Cooperrider laced a hard single over the third baseman’s head for MV’s first hit and second RBI, scoring Fhagen-Smith and brother Aksel Cooperrider. Nainoa Cooperrider advanced to second on the throw home. Cardoza helped himself by hitting a single scoring Cooperrider, and that was all he needed to secure the win.
Upcoming events: May 13 away vs. Coyle and Cassidy (EAC game); May 16 home vs. West Bridgewater (non-league game); May 18 home vs. Bishop Stang (EAC game).
