Vineyard defeats West Bridgewater Saturday, 11-8

Elias Fhagen-Smith pitched his first starting victory Saturday.

In a non-league game Saturday, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys baseball team defeated West Bridgewater, 11-8 Saturday.

Elias Fhagen-Smith won his first varsity start pitching five innings, striking out 10 West Bridgewater hitters while giving up only four hits, walking three and one earned run for the MV victory.

Fhagen-Smith helped his cause with two hits (single and double), scoring two runs and stealing a base. The MV bats hammered out 15 hits in support of Fhagen-Smith, starting in the top of the first inning after the first out with four consecutive hits — singles by Jacob Cardoza and Jonas Lukowitz followed by a two-RBI double from Emerson Mahoney and an RBI triple from Aidan Aliberti. Mitchell Chaves completed the first inning attack with an RBI groundout.  

After West Bridgewater answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first and a couple scoreless frames, MV scored five runs in the fourth inning once again highlighted by four consecutive hits this time a lead off double by Fhagen-Smith followed by an RBI single by Aksel Cooperrider, a single by brother Nainoa Cooperrider and a RBI single by Cardoza.  Aidan Aliberti added a two-RBI single later that inning. Cardoza ended the game with four hits, three RBI, two runs scored and four stolen bases while Aliberti had three hits, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.

MV’s record stands at 11-6 overall (3-4 in EAC conference play).
