Islander Noah Buehler placed second in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition. His winning photograph of a 1950s automobile on cinderblocks was taken during a school trip to Cuba. Ninth District Representative William Keating presented the award.

Each spring, this nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the members of the House of Representatives. Students submit original artwork in seven different categories, including collage, computer-generated art, drawings, mixed media, paintings, photography, and prints.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
