Boats before the start of the race in light winds. - Lisa Stout

Due to gusty winds and imminent squalls, the Holmes Hole Sailing Association race last Thursday evening was canceled. Gloom prevailed.

On Sunday, 13 boats started at 10 am in light air. Although the course was shortened, two did not finish. Of those three in the A Division  that did get around the triangle, Tango, a J100 sailed by Phil Hale, came in first. Next was a guest entry, Racehorse, a W-37 owned by Donald Tolias. Escape, another J100, skippered by Tom and Laurie Welch, took the third spot.

Tamu, an Alerion X28 new to the fleet this year and sailed by Tom Wescott,  came in first for both elapsed and corrected time in the B Division. Tamu is a Swahili word that, roughly translated, means all that is sweet, good, and beautiful in life. Second place went to Stormalong, a Pierson 31 sailed by HHSA Commodore Jerry Goodale. Third position was taken by frequent winner Tyche, a Vineyard 15 sailed by Bow Van Riper.

The wind filled in a bit for the 2 pm race, blowing as high as 12 knots by 3:30. There were, however, frustrating periods of calm when clusters of boats sat jingling and clanking, going nowhere. Of the seven boats in the A Division, Tango and Masquerade tied for first place. Masquerade, a Morris 36, was singlehanded by Michael Loberg. Zander Melany’s  J70 came in third. In the B Division, of the 10 starters, the first three places were taken by Alerion Express 28s. Mo Flam’s Penelope was first, Tamu was second, and Jim Dixon’s At Last was third.

HHSA races are held on Thursdays and Sundays. All are welcome. Please visit holmesholesailingassociation.blogspot.com for details.
