By Margaret Emerson
renting
another’s
home
becomes
my
amazingly
welcome
retreat
at day’s end
from the cold
after travel
greeting guests
surrounded
by her things
untouched
but telling
their own stories
of her
the photographer
bicycler
collector
lover
new orleans
discoverer
refrigerator notes
reminders
numbers
magnetic buttons
define surprise
my favorite
eye level
on freezer door
there is so much
to love about you
books recognized
some old
some young
too many plants
needing attention
too many glasses
in the cupboard
was that here
or was that
in my cottage
kitchen
Since retiring as a professor of nursing at Northeastern University, Margaret Emerson lives in Chilmark, where she pursues her passion for painting and poetry.
