Happy Spring, everyone! In my last column, I mentioned that the Brazilian Consulate in Boston is going to be on-Island on Saturday, April 22, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, and I would like to take the opportunity to further elaborate on this initiative and its many benefits.
The first fair like this one occurred in Somerville on Dec. 3, 2016, and the consulate’s aim for that fair was to present all the educational opportunities available for people who are invested in furthering their education because regardless of an individual’s status, there are many options. One of the organizers said that education information and opportunities are one of the main topics requested by Brazilians living in Massachusetts. The requests range from how to obtain a high school diploma through programs in Brazil and in the U.S. to how to have access to courses at community colleges, and how to pass on to their kids their cultural heritage — the Portuguese language. The organizers are excited to present the many options and hopeful that once these options are presented, folks will learn how to access them and ultimately utilize them to achieve their dreams.
The organizers of the event got in touch with Justine Deoliveira, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School head of the world language department, to invite her as well as the Portuguese teachers to explain to parents the many ways in which they are building the Portuguese program, the importance of cultivating their heritage language, and the many opportunities bilingual children will have by being able to navigate both worlds with ease, with cultural and academic knowledge of the language.
Language is one of the many tools we have to explain who are, where we have been, and the story of our ancestors, and preserving language can be one the best cultural gifts we can give our kids.
The fair will be the consulate’s first on the Island, and the goal is to address the needs of the Island’s Brazilian community. While they will concentrate on education, they will also focus on immigration, worker’s rights, and health. Various organizations and community leaders will help shape the lectures and workshops to the interests of the Brazilian Island population. Some of the organizations who will present at the event are Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, Massachusetts Alliance for Portuguese Speakers, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, We Stand Together/Estamos Todos Juntos MV, ACE MV, Share Your Love Foundation, Brazilian Women’s Group, Brazilian Worker Center, and many others. Brazilian film screening
Join the Oak Bluffs library for a Portuguese-language film (with English subtitles), followed by snacks and bilingual conversation. The screening of the movie “The Middle of the World” will be on April 20 at 6 pm. The movie is based on a true story and follows a family of seven moving 2,000 miles across Brazil on bicycles in pursuit of a job and a decent life. The drama opens a window onto another culture and speaks the universal language of teen angst.

Feliz primavera! Na última coluna, eu mencionei que o Consulado Brasileiro em Boston estará em Ilha no sábado, 22 de abril, das 10h às 16h, na Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, e eu gostaria de aproveitar a oportunidade para continuar a elaborar sobre esta iniciativa e seus muitos benefícios.
A primeira feira como esta ocorreu em Somerville no dia 3 de dezembro de 2016, e o objetivo do consulado para à feira era apresentar todas as oportunidades educacionais disponíveis para as pessoas que investem em promover a sua educação, porque independentemente do status de um indivíduo, existem muitas opções. Um dos organizadores disse que as informações e oportunidades educacionais são um dos principais temas solicitados pelos brasileiros que vivem em Massachusetts. Os pedidos variam desde a obtenção de um diploma de ensino médio através de programas no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos sobre como ter acesso a cursos em faculdades comunitárias e como transmitir aos seus filhos o seu patrimônio cultural – a língua portuguesa. Os organizadores estão animado para apresentar as muitas opções, e esperam que uma vez que essas opções sejam apresentadas, que as pessoas possam acessá-las e, finalmente, utilizá-las para alcançar seus sonhos.
Os organizadores do evento entraram em contato com Justine Deoliveira, diretora do departamento de línguas da Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, para convidá-la, assim como as professoras de português, a explicar aos pais as muitas maneiras pelas quais estão construindo o programa português, a importância de cultivar sua língua de herança e as muitas oportunidades que as crianças bilíngües terão ao poder navegar com facilidade em ambos os mundos, com conhecimento cultural e acadêmico da língua.
A linguagem é uma das muitas ferramentas que temos para explicar quem somos, onde estamos e a história dos nossos antepassados, e preservar a linguagem pode ser um dos melhores bens culturais que podemos dar aos nossos filhos.
A feira será a primeira do consulado na Ilha e o objetivo é atender às necessidades da comunidade brasileira da Ilha. Enquanto eles se concentrarão na educação, eles também se concentrarão na imigração, nos direitos dos trabalhadores e na saúde. Várias organizações e líderes comunitários ajudarão a moldar as palestras e oficinas para os interesses da população da ilha brasileira. Junte-se à biblioteca de Oak Bluffs para um filme em português (com legendas em inglês), seguido por lanches e conversas bilíngües. A exibição do filme “O Meio do Mundo” será no dia 20 de abril às 18h. O filme é baseado em uma história verdadeira e segue uma família de sete movendo 2.000 milhas em todo o Brasil em bicicletas em busca de um emprego e uma vida decente. O drama abre uma janela para outra culturas e fala a linguagem universal da angústia adolescente.
