At a meeting of the congregation of the Federated Church on Sunday, May 7, the Rev. David Berube was accepted to be their next settled minister. The Rev. Mr. Berube and his wife Ellen live in Oak Bluffs. According to a press release, Berube has been a member of the Oak Bluffs Police Department since 2000, and a lieutenant colonel in the Massachusetts Air National Guard since 1998.
David Berube is a native of Connecticut, and was educated at Eastern Connecticut State University and then at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1987 to 1997, he served Baptist churches in Revere, Fall River, and Hanson. He worked for the American Baptist Churches of Connecticut before coming to the Island. He has been the senior chaplain for the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.
The Rev. Sharon Eckhardt will continue as the interim pastor until July 31, when the Rev. Mr. Berube will officially become the settled pastor. His first Sunday in the pulpit will be August 6.
The press release from the church goes on to say, “The Federated Church was very blessed to have the Rev. Eckhardt’s ministry following the untimely loss of the Rev. Amy Edwards a year ago.”
