More than 200 elementary string players from beginner through advanced will take the stage at the Performing Arts Center at the regional high school this Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6 pm. The strings program began in 1986 as an afterschool option, and is now offered at all Island schools, usually during the school day.

The beginner demonstration is expected to be more dramatic than ever, thanks to the innovations of the newest string teacher, Rebecca Laird. Highlights in the program include arrangements of “Gloria” from Handel’s “Messiah,” “Fiddles on Fire” (no instruments will be harmed), Vivaldi’s “Autumn,” an early music classic called “To the Greenwood,” and the “D Jam Blues.” Admission is free; donations are welcomed.
