MV Mariners good as gold in Lake Placid

A team of Martha’s Vineyard Mariners Peewees captured the gold medal last weekend in a youth hockey tournament held at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The Mariners won five games en route to the title, defeating the Greater Providence Bears, 4-1, in the gold medal game.

MV started off the tournament with a 9-3 victory over the Bears, then defeated Revolution Youth (Warwick, Penn.), 7-1; Westchester Vipers (Elmsford, N.Y.), 7-0; and the Igloo Jaguars (Mount Laurel, N.J.), 7-0; before rolling into a gold medal game rematch with Greater Providence.

The championship game was a tight contest late into the third period, with the Mariners up 2-1. The Vineyard picked up a crucial insurance goal on the power play. Liam Conley won a face-off back to Frank Paciello, who passed to Marin Gillis for a shot on goal. After the initial save, Cole Lambert knocked in the rebound for a 3-1 lead. Cole followed up with an empty-netter to ice the win and the gold for MV.

In addition to winning the gold, Chase Grant, Liam Conley, Frank Paciello, and Marin Gillis won the relay skate for fastest skaters, and Zachary Mathias won the award for top goaltender in the shootout competition.

Nate Averill, Aiden Conley, Micah Simmons, Liam Conley, Cal D’Arcy, Chase Grant, Micah Simmons, Cole Lambert, Alana Nevin, Wyatt Nicholson, and Chase Toomey paced the Mariners offense throughout the tournament. Paige Anderson, Nick BenDavid, Marin Gillis, and Frank Paciello led a stalwart Mariners defense that conceded just five goals in five games, while goalie Zach Mathias posted two shutouts. The Mariners coaches are Tim Bettencourt, Pete Gillis, and Gary Simmons.
