*Phyllis Vecchia’s Creative Drama non-profit just completed a four month program at the Tisbury school. According to a press release, the sixth grade studied the life and times of Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Hillary Clinton. The eighth grade studied Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”), Mary Chipman Lawrence (whaling wife from Falmouth), Phillis Wheatley (first African-American poet), and the suffragists Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Two eighth graders from Tisbury said, “I liked it because it’s nice to learn about women’s history, because we don’t study it that much in class.” And, “I learned that women were very important in history. Women have been strong for a very long time.”
The program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard, private funding, and donors. Vecchia will be at the West Tisbury School in the spring to bring to life Abigail Adams, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Amelia Bloomer.
