Spend Earth Day cleaning up your favorite beach. —Ralph Stewart

Join the Vineyard Conservation Society for its 26th annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup on Saturday, April 21, from 10 am to 12 pm. Protect wildlife, beautify our beaches, and kick off spring at this annual family-friendly event. Head out to your favorite beach at 10 am, link up with a VCS volunteer, and embark on your beach cleanup journey. Afterward, join VCS at the Oak Bluffs Sailing Camp from 12 to 2 pm for food, a free raffle, and to compare beach finds. This is a zero-waste event. If you have reusable water bottles, please bring them along. MVY Radio will be broadcasting live from Eastville Beach during the cleanup.

Every year, local organizations volunteer to work at designated beaches. Returning this year are the M.V. Savings Bank, Lagoon Pond Association, Friends of Sengekontacket, Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah, Tisbury Waterways, M.V. Surfcasters Association, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, the Church of Latter-Day Saints, M.V. Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby Committee, Junior Girl Scout troops, Brownie troop, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. New groups joining are Felix Neck, the Oak Bluffs Conservation Commission, and the Chilmark shellfish constable Isaiah Scheffer, who will be taking adventurous volunteers on his boat to clean Menemsha Pond. Please meet him at the Texaco station at 10 am.

The VCS offers a special thank-you to the departments of public works from Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown, as well as the M.V. Refuse Department and Bruno’s for taking care of the trash. This year’s food donations come from the Black Dog and the Scottish Bakehouse. Earth Day Beach Cleanup is sponsored by Cape and Islands United Way, and the M.V. Savings Bank.
