On Wednesday, August 22, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival will screen the awardwinning documentary “Time for Ilhan.” The film begins at 8 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. Film subject Ilhan Omar and director Norah Shapiro will attend the screening and lead a discussion after the film.
Ilhan Omar is an immigrant from Somalia who came to the U.S. with her family in 1995. Like many in her community, she observed an increasing disconnect between American citizens and the officials who represent them. Omar set out to become the first elected Somali-American legislator, taking on a 43-year incumbent for a seat as Minnesota state representative.
The film brings viewers inside her historic 2016 campaign, as she fights for the fresh changes she believes the American government needs now more than ever.
