Two escape from boat fire

Tisbury officials are investigating a boat fire that occurred at about 1 am in Vineyard Haven.

Two people aboard a boat docked at Tisbury Wharf Co. escaped injury when it caught fire at around 1 am on Sept. 1, according to Tisbury officials.

The 52-foot motor yacht Wanderer is registered in Newport, R.I., and owned by Brian Pane of Bristol, R.I.

Because the vessel was tied up, firefighters did not launch the Tisbury fire boat, Tisbury Fire Chief John Schilling said. Tisbury firefighters hit the burning yacht with water before using the vessel’s onboard fire suppression system to kill the blaze completely, he said.

Oak Bluffs responded with its EMS rehab truck, which tended to those aboard the Wanderer, as well as several people in an adjacent yacht who evacuated due to the fiberglass smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Chief Schilling said.
