Featherstone Center for the Arts opens “The Art of Boat Building” with a reception on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 6 pm at the Francine Kelly Gallery in Featherstone’s Art Barn.
This unique show about the beauty and art of boat building is co-curated by Nat Benjamin, co-owner of Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway, and photographer Alison Shaw and Tom Dunlop, co-creators of the book “Schooner.” Contributions from boatbuilders Phil Hale (M.V. Shipyard) and Rick Brown (Far Cry Boats) are also part of the show.
Visitors to the exhibit will follow the process of building a wooden boat from design to launch. According to a press release, in the course of their journey, visitors will learn some of the history of boatbuilding on Martha’s Vineyard, gain an understanding of the engineering that goes into creating these magnificent vessels, and get to know some of the unique personalities who helped make boatbuilding the iconic Vineyard industry it has become.
