Debby, what exactly is a sonographer?
An ultrasound technologist. In my case I do breast ultrasounds.

How long have you been doing it?
Thirty-three years; I went to a hospital program to be an x-ray technologist after high school.

How long have you been at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital?
I’ve been here for 18 years.

Where do you live?
Actually I live in Bourne; I’ve been commuting all these years. I’ll stay on the Island and do three 12-hour shifts at a time.

What do you most enjoy about your work?
I enjoy people. People have a lot of stress, and they don’t necessarily look forward to coming in for an ultrasound, so I try to make them more comfortable, less stressful. We can be a little more relaxed here on the Island and take some extra time with our patients.
