The MVRHS football team traveled to Fairhaven High School on Friday night and dropped a 19-16 decision to the Blue Devils.

For Vineyard Coach Donald Herman, the game was a tale of two halves, with Fairhaven building up a 13-0 halftime lead and the Vineyarders responding well after the break. “We won the second half, 16-6. That’s a positive to take out of it,” he said. “I liked the way we came out and played in the second half. It was that they showed some fight and resilience this week.”

Andres Garcia put the Vineyarders on the board with a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Tristan Scheller ran in the two-point conversion. Ivan Shepherd hooked up with Scheller on a 14-yard TD pass late in the fourth period, then passed to Antone Moreis for two points to complete the scoring on the night. Twice during the game, the Vineyarders had the ball first and ten at the Fairhaven 15, but squandered both chances.

Shepherd was 7 for 14 with 92 yards passing, and added eight tackles. Scheller caught five passes for 88 yards, Michael Courtney made nine tackles, and Jason Davey had five tackles to go with two sacks.

The Vineyarders host Seekonk Thursday night at 5:30 pm in what may be the final home game of the season, depending on whether the MIAA schedules a home or away contest for MV the following week. The decision will be made on Sunday following the conclusion of high school play over the weekend. Vineyard seniors will be recognized prior to the opening kickoff at 5 pm. T shirts for the Estrella family will again be on sale during the game. Short-sleeve shirts are $20 and long-sleeve shirts, $25.
