I know the winter is supposed to be the quiet time on the Island, but the up- Island folk are really upping their game this year, and there is a lot to do this week. Yes, much of it is holiday-related, and many (but not all) of the events involve shopping. Regardless, it is a good week to go out and see your neighbors perform and show their art. It’s also nice to mingle with neighbors this time of year, get caught up, and break bread together.
The Aquinnah Artisans Holiday Sale is this Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Old Aquinnah Town Hall. There will be handmade wampum jewelry, pottery, dance-inspired clothing, paintings, art cards, herbal salves and balms, unique gifts from Island Naturals, baked goods and honey from Orange Peel Bakery, and more. All the vendors are Island artisans, and many of them are from Aquinnah. There will also be an ornament- and card-making craft table, so you can create something as well. At the library this week: Storytime will be on Thursday from 3:30 to 4 pm and Saturday from 10:30 to 11 am. There will be an all-ages craft on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 6 pm; anyone can come in and make holiday cards. The kids’ craft on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 am to 3 pm, will be making a Star of David. The Afterschool Club will meet on Tuesday from 4 to 5 pm. The next meeting of the Book Club will be on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 5 to 6 pm, discussing “The Guernsey Literary Society.” There will be a holiday party at the library with wrapping paper making on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 3 to 6 pm.
The West Tisbury School sixth grade class will be holding a Holiday Bake Sale this Saturday and Sunday, and the following weekend as well, from 2 to 4 pm at Middletown Nursery. Twenty-five percent of all tree and wreath sales go directly to the sixth grade class. If you need to get your tree and some greens, and a little midday sugar fix, stop in and support the sixth grade class.
Pathways Arts will show three films about the beautiful Pacific Ocean: Johnny Friday’s “The Wild Pacific” and “Espiritu Santo Island” and “Destination Baja” from Carl Safina’s “Saving the Oceans Series” on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 pm. Every Saturday at 3 pm, there is a family qi gong class guided by Allison Cameron Parry. There is a $15 per family suggested donation. This class is for all ages. On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the M.V. Poet’s Collective will meet and read at 7 pm. Pathways events are free and open to all. They have a holiday sale happening, as well. You can stop by the space and do some holiday shopping. They are open from 11 am to 5 pm every day except Sunday and Wednesday.
Kate Taylor will be featured in the “Gifts of Art: An Island Art Show” at the Carnegie (the old Edgartown library) at 58 North Water St. in Edgartown. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 pm. The show will be open Dec. 7 to 9, from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Cat Garfinkle will lead a restorative yoga practice on Dec. 8 from 3 to 5:30 pm at the Yoga Barn. Cat’s class encourages you to slow down this holiday season, and treat yourself to a deeply nourishing yoga practice to refresh and reconnect to your mind, body, and spirit. Restorative Yoga is a gentle and quiet practice that uses props to support your body. All levels are welcome, and preregistration is encouraged; there is a fee of $35. Kate Taylor will be singing in the Offerings of Music and Light at the Chilmark Community Church this Sunday at 5 pm. There will be other musical acts that night you’ll be happy you heard. There will also be candle lighting and refreshments. The church is located at 9 Menemsha Crossroads, in Chilmark.
There will be a Chilmark Holiday Flea Market next Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10 am to 3 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. Come for the holiday edition of the famous Summer Flea Market. Handmade items for sale from Vineyard artisans and craftsmen will include holiday crafts, jewelry, candles, knitted accessories, leather goods, clothing, art, pottery, and more. Fresh holiday centerpieces and greens will also be for sale. Food will include chowder, sandwiches, and baked goods. Presented by the Chilmark Community Church.
