Making a difference for families affected by cancer

To the Editor,

On Wednesday night, April 10, the M.V. Ice Arena hosted a tournament, “Stickin’ It to Cancer,” in memory of Erica Ponte, a beloved wife and mother who lost her battle with cancer on March 2. The varsity girls and boys teams participated in this event.

On behalf of the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who organized, attended, and/or donated, as all of the proceeds were allocated to our group.

The MVCSG provides emotional and financial support to year-round Island cancer patients and their families.

Support group meetings are held every Wednesday at noon at the M.V. Hebrew Center, where patients, survivors, family, and caregivers can receive support, friendship, and a wealth of information.

We also raise money to help with many different treatment costs, such as transportation, hotel stays, copays, gas, and parking, to name just a few. This money comes from private donations, various grants, and several fundraisers held each year.

Thank you, as well, to the Ponte family for their thoughtfulness and generosity in allowing us to continue our mission: “No one with cancer needs to be alone.”
