High winds have forced the cancellation of ferries by the Steamship Authority on Thursday afternoon.

The Steamship Authority ferry Martha’s Vineyard was forced to reverse course Thursday afternoon and return to Vineyard Haven because no slips were available in Woods Hole. The vessel departed the Vineyard Haven terminal at 1:15 pm, according to SSA spokesman Sean Driscoll and turned around roughly 15 minutes after it got underway. Windy conditions wound up cancelling the departures of the MV Woods Hole and the MV Katama and they never left their slips in Woods Hole. The third slip there isn’t usable due to construction activity. The Martha’s Vineyard therefore had nowhere to park itself except back where it had sailed from.
