The American Legion Post 257 on Martin Road is flying the flag of the late George Lane for the month of September, Commander Jo Ann Murphy wrote in an email. Earlier this year, the Legion began flying flags given to families of a veteran who died.

Meanwhile, Murphy told The Times that a brief ceremony is planned Friday to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. The ceremony will be held at 8:45 am outside the American Legion, which is the time that the first of two planes crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. Tisbury Fire Chief Greg Leland, a military veteran, told The Times he plans to be at Friday’s ceremony.
