Oak Bluffs selectmen sidelined long-serving appointee Gail Barmakian Tuesday night and appointed Brian Packish to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for a one-year term. In the lead up to the vote, Barmakian highlighted her work on water quality regulations, among other things. Packish touted his work with the MVC, particularly in shaping the DRI checklist when he was chair of the planning board.

“I think this is an embarrassment of riches that we have two people willing to do it,” selectman Greg Coogan said, because it’s a lot of time.

“I’d like to mix things up a little bit [differently] on the representation this year and see where we end up next year,” selectman Ryan Ruley said. “We can always revisit it.”

After the vote, Packish thanked Barmakian for her service and said he will do his best to carry forward some of her work while paying attention to what the selectmen want.

“Brian, with all due respect, I still intend to participate in the water quality,” Barmakian said. “I don’t think I have to do it as a seletman but as a member of the town. But thank you for the offer.”

In other business, following an exploration of conflict of interest matters relative to his work with the Island Housing Trust, the board appointed Garri Saganenko to the Oak Bluffs affordable housing committee. Following a conversation with the state Ethics Commission, he will keep ethics forms handy for certain situations that may arise during his tenure, Saganenko said.

    • Can’t agree with you on this one. I’m confident neither does Gail. I don’t see either Gail or the balance of the board playing the gender card.
