Behind the Bookstore Café in Edgartown hosted a book-signing event for Marianne Larned’s new book, “Stone Soup for a Sustainable World,” on Thursday afternoon. The book features stories from young people across the world who are making an impact on sustainability through different projects and organizations they created. One of these stories features Martha’s Vineyard organization Plastic Free MV.

On the Vineyard, teen students Jasper Ralph and Quinlan Slavin are members of an organization called Plastic Free MV. Started by Annemarie Ralph, Jasper’s mother, Plastic Free MV works to eliminate single-use plastic on the Island. Since their launch, the group has rallied voters to support a bylaw that banned plastic water and soda bottled under 34 ounces in the towns of Aquinnah, Chilmark, West Tisbury and Tisbury.

Nancy Slonim Aronie was also at the event, as Larned was a student in one of her classes at Chilmark Writing Workshop. Aronie, “Writing From the Heart” columnist for the Times, is a passionate environmental activist, and spoke about her connection to the event. “I’m privileged and honored to be a part of this event,” said Aronie.
