To the Editor:
I wanted to publicly thank the Martha’s Vineyard commissioners for approving the plans for the MVRHS athletic complex. I can imagine how grueling and arduous that 16-month process had been. I commend them on hosting at least six public hearings, taking nearly every opinion imaginable (both in person and written word), soil testing, and researching studies from across the globe. To say the process was thorough is an understatement.
I am one of the women’s soccer coaches at the high school, a lifelong athlete, high school counselor, and most important, a parent of two female athletes. I have been and continue to be in support of this project. The need for this athletic complex has been well-documented. It has been well-researched, documented, debated, and founded that this project has merit, and will be good for our community — most important, our athletes and our school. The Oak Bluffs planning board needs to move this project along, and look at the hours, days, weeks, years of research and money that have already gone into this project, and approve. I have children in our school system — one a 10th grader, the other an eighth grader. For them, and all the other athletes who play on those fields and run on that track, this project needs to begin today.
