Heard on Main Street: Duct tape is like “The Force,” It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

Last week I enjoyed a lovely visit with Johanna Robichau. It seemed as if we hadn’t seen each other forever. These moments to connect with friends are more important now than ever. They bring back memories of times that only feel as if they were years ago.

I have decided that everyone else must be tired of emails. I used to get good announcements of fun things going on in Tisbury and suddenly they just aren’t there anymore. My getting out and about is limited so I used to be quite happy with the phone calls and emails because I felt as if they helped me keep all of us more in touch with what is going on in town. I have to be grateful for the libraries. They keep me on the list. They are also awfully good about giving me a little notice. It is frustrating to hear from someone about something good — but it will be over by the time the paper comes out.

More Vineyard Haven library news: Where else can you get first class art instruction and it is free? Join Elizabeth R. Whelan as she leads a 20-part drawing course, going in depth about drawing technique. There’s no need to buy supplies; most techniques can be applied to all drawing media so use just pencils and paper or whatever you have on hand. She gives demonstrations and shows examples. The topic is addressed for two weeks in a row to allow follow-up with questions. Online Wednesdays at 11 am, through Sept.1.

Our library has partnered with The Trustees of Reservations to help you to explore places on Martha’s Vineyard and across Massachusetts. Trustees “Go Passes” may be picked up at the library for free or reduced admission at Trustees properties. Go Pass admission is for admission to a family level Trustees membership, for two adults and children under 18. Go passes are valid for admission only, not valid for discounts in place of any other permits or passes. Trustees care for Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge and Long Point Wildlife Refuge.

You already know that the Fair begins next week on Thursday with all kinds of events available through the weekend. The hall won’t open until the judging is complete, but everything else will be just waiting for you to come and enjoy after 10 am. My grandchildren can’t wait. And we all have good memories of all the time spent there. It is also a wonderful time to run into Island friends whom we don’t always see in the summer.

I hope you will let me know if you see something you think is remarkable. I always love the kids’ art and vegetable displays. Of course, all the animals are fun, especially those with young ones. And the food and music and outside activities are great. And all that before you even get to the carnival, if you make it that far.

Congratulations to Skip and Carol Bailey who celebrate their anniversary on Saturday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go to Goodie Stiller Corriveau tomorrow. Sunday belongs to Braden Kuehne. Wish the best on Wednesday to Kathy Welch.
