Connecting hearts and hands: A new resource for Island volunteers
Martha’s Vineyard’s vibrant volunteer spirit is about to get a powerful new tool. An innovative website, www.vineyardvolunteers.com, will transform how Islanders connect with volunteer opportunities across our community.
This online platform addresses a real need. With more than 150 nonprofits sustaining our Island community, organizations often struggle. to connect with willing volunteers who possess the right skills and interests. In addition, volunteers also serve on Boards, town committees, county councils, and community service initiatives to support the Island community.
The numbers tell an inspiring story: 54 percent of older adults on Martha’s Vineyard volunteer their time and talents, nearly double the national average of 28.6 percent. In 2024, this extraordinary commitment was estimated to be valued at $42 million.
“Nonprofits rely on volunteers to supplement their workforce and stay operational,” explains Karen Tewhey, a Vineyard Vision Fellow and HAMV staff member who is launching the website. “Our volunteers offer incredible expertise in business, finance, fishing, agriculture, conservation, education, social services, healthcare, arts, culture, and so much more.”
The new website will serve as a matchmaking service, allowing potential volunteers to browse opportunities that align with their skills, interests, and availability. Whether someone wants to help with grant writing, work with children or elders, support environmental conservation, or share professional expertise, the platform will make those connections seamless.
This initiative represents a cornerstone of Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard’s broader community engagement efforts. By harnessing the empathy, energy, and expertise that volunteers bring to our Island, we’re strengthening the social fabric that makes Martha’s Vineyard such a special place to call home.
