Here I am writing to you from chilly Key West, Fla., where the temperature is in the low 50s, but who am I to complain when I know my beloved Edgartown is feeling temps in the lower 10s? Sending my friends all the warmth I can muster up this week — stay safe, stay warm, stay connected! Here are a few ways how this week.
On Friday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 8 pm, the annual Edgartown School Eighth Grade Silent Auction will take place. This auction raises money so that every student in the graduating class can go on their end-of-year trip to New York City and Philadelphia. Students will visit the Museum of Natural History, the Statue of Liberty, see “Hamilton” on Broadway, and explore historic Philadelphia. Help support them by heading to the P.A. Club and bidding on items such as jewelry, clothing, gift cards to incredible Island businesses, and much more!
Also, I just was made aware that Tisbury Waterways announced its 2026 Environmental Studies Scholarship. Students from Martha’s Vineyard majoring in subjects such as marine biology or environmental science who will enter their junior or senior year of undergraduate school, or graduate school, are invited to apply for the $3,000 award. Apply at tisburywaterways.org and find out more details there — what a fantastic opportunity!
On the 7th at 9 am, join Colleen at the Edgartown library for a Vinyasa Power Yoga class. I’ve done this class before, and it’s definitely a great way to start the weekend and warm up the body in this winter weather. Vinyasa (a practice designed to help you heal while keeping you in peak physical shape) incorporates elements of strength-building, making it a dynamic experience. This class is free and open to the public, and has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library. Maybe in a future column I’ll chat with a “friend” and learn more about the work they do for the library. I know some friends read this column — hi, Ann!
Talking about friends, this “Sisterhood and Seafood: A Galentine’s Pasta Night,” happening on the 12th at 5:30 pm at the FARM Institute, is a great event to do with girlfriends! Gather for a hands-on culinary experience, learning step by step how to shuck shellfish with the women experts from M.V. Shellfish Group. Using fresh clams and scallops, you’ll prepare a delicious pasta sauce, followed by a demonstration from Katie Leaird of Martha’s Vineyard Pasta on how to make pasta from scratch. Register online: https://thetrustees.org/event/44326.
Casey Smith on Feb. 6, Camden Townes on Feb. 8, Nicole Mejia and Lisa Belcastro on Feb. 10, Arielle Reid Faria on Feb. 11, and Taylor Stone on Feb. 12: May your February birthday week be filled with health, delicious eats, and good times!
