The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is kicking off summer with the unveiling of two new exhibits and the seasonal opening of the 18th century Cooke House. According to a press release, “Loïs Mailou Jones: Selected Works” and “Identifying Eisenstaedt” will both premiere at the Museum’s Summer Opening Party on Friday, June 12, from 5 to 7 pm at the museum’s Edgartown campus.

“It all really started on this Island,” said Loïs Mailou Jones (1905-1998) of her trailblazing artistic career. A painter, professor, and member of the Harlem Renaissance, Jones’ career spanned more than 50 years, and earned her international acclaim at a time when it was nearly impossible for an African-American woman to attain it. “Loïs Mailou Jones: Selected Works” focuses on Jones’ long career, with an emphasis on work she created on Martha’s Vineyard. Made up entirely of loans, it is a rare chance to see these privately owned works.

Known for his iconic, history-making photographs, Alfred Eisenstaedt also took pictures of everyday life here on Martha’s Vineyard. Elegantly framed and deftly captured, the timeless images by one of the 20th century’s most celebrated photographers remain iconic of their era. “Identifying Eisenstaedt” includes images that highlight Island community gatherings, political events, and other day-to-day activities. The museum is looking for the public’s help in identifying the people in them.

In addition to the opening of the new exhibitions, Dr. Chris Chapman, trustee of the Loïs Mailou Jones estate, will briefly speak about the artist’s life and legacy, and answer any questions. The museum will also unveil its new publication, Island Stories: Highlights from the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, featuring 50 featured objects from the collection. Finally, the 18th century Cooke House will open for the season that night.

Annual Summer Opening Party, Friday, June 12, 5 to 7 pm at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s Edgartown Campus. The event is free and open to all. “Loïs Mailou Jones: Selected Works” will be open through August 23. “Identifying Eisenstaedt” will be open through August 2.
