To the Editor:

For some time now, the residents of Edgartown have endured lousy service from their local post office here in Edgartown. Whether you want to pick up a package or just to purchase some stamps, there is always a line that takes at least 30 minutes to reach the postal employee.

The station now has a new postmistress, who is really trying to service the customers. However, the employees have a definite attitude of “Why do something now when it takes a little effort?” It is a well-known fact that a postal job is for life, and they cannot be terminated.

The employees who service the public never have a smile, and give the impression to all of us that they are just waiting for the time that they can retire and receive a fat monthly retirement check. There is no incentive for them to be pleasant, as they know that nothing can happen to their job because of lousy service.

Many of us have written to the postmaster general’s office in Washington on these complaints, and we do not even get a response.
