Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School junior Pete Gillis, a tri-captain on the Vineyarder golf team, shot a 76 to tie for seventh place in the field of 84 at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 State Individual Championship on Monday at Cranberry Valley Golf Course in Harwich, his best showing in three consecutive years qualifying for the event.
“It’s really been a pleasure to see him develop into the outstanding player that he has become in these three years, and I feel blessed that I still have him for one more year. He’s only a junior,” Vineyard Coach Doug DeBettencourt said.
Last week in the Division 3 Cape and Islands Sectionals at Dennis Highlands, Gillis carded a 77, placing third among all golfers, to clinch one of seven spots in the individual tourney field. MVRHS finished third behind Bishop Stang and Mashpee, missing out on the state team finals by just four strokes.
