A new banner stretches across Main Street in Vineyard Haven as a reminder to residents and visitors to take precautions against COVID-19. -Teresa Kruszewski

A new banner went up on Main Street Friday reminding residents and visitors alike to wear a mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The banner, which was paid for by the Vineyard Haven Business Association, states: “Welcome to Vineyard Haven. Thank you for helping to keep our town safe and our businesses open.”

Along with messaging about masks, it also urges visitors to social distance, wash their hands, and stay home if they’re sick.

Sarah York, president of the Vineyard Haven Business Association, said the sign is similar to a banner that went up in Edgartown. On Tuesday, the Tisbury select board endorsed the idea of the sign.
While Tisbury is not one of the towns that’s approved a mandatory mask order, it is highly recommended.

“Most of the businesses in town wanted to make sure it was clear,” York said. “There’s confusion in town. There are street signs, but they’re not visible enough.”

The message is that “wearing a mask is the expectation when you’re walking around,” she said. The banner is a subtle reminder of that expectation.

  1. I have the opposite opinion on people who don’t wear masks . My first impression is usually brainwashed moron. I know that’s harsh, but after the last 5-6 months, have they not been paying attention to the news!

  2. It’s always a banner day in Tisbury. You can always find parking to visit the empty store fronts, smell the odor of raw sewage emanating from the lift station or just drive on through and get your icecream in Edgartown or Oak Bluffs!

  3. You would not have sewage lift station smell if you did not have a sewer system.
I remember when the Island was great.
    Everyone pooped in their ‘backyard’.
    It hardly ever smelled.

  4. Nothing says “Mandatory” that I saw or the consequences for violators on the Tisbury sign just like OB’s sign.
What exactly is the enforcement if any in all the island towns. it would be nice for us to know exactly what we will be in for this August, September and beyond due to the lack of sincere and serious actions with some teeth.
We personally do not see many taking the mask & social distancing situation seriously in any town including Gay Had and would like to see just how serious our leaders are or do they just want to be politically correct are more concerned about businesses than lives.
I wish they would all be required to review the stats of all the states that are right now totally regretting opening to soon, not strictly enforcing Mask & Social Distancing and their CV-19 numbers for cases are going thu the roof.
The island definitely is not a sterilized sanctuary especially with the flood of visitors coming from the more serious states with outbreaks and deaths.
When they leave to return to their hot spots from what we have seen in our brief travels out they are going to have left their CV-19 marks on our island and like other states our leaders will have some serious explaining to do.
