A rain storm led to flash flooding along Beach Road and Five Corners in Vineyard Haven on Monday afternoon. Water had reached the doors of a few area businesses by the early afternoon, though meteorologists expected rains to diminish.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated it was notified of the flash flooding at 2:30 pm on Monday via “amateur radio.”

Andrew Loconco, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Norton office, told the Times close that rain was expected to let up shortly after 3 pm.

He said there are no additional showers south of the Vineyard and the current rain was drifting north toward the Cape.

He said the rain was not related to Hurricane Ernesto, which is “well to our east.”

The National Weather Service also released a coastal flood statement, saying up to a half-foot of flooding may be possible in low-lying shorelines and tidal waterways from 8 pm on Monday to 3 am on Tuesday.

    1. John, not only did Five Corners flood,
it flooded in CT and two women were washed away.
When are we going to reject fossil fuels
      to reduce greenhouse effects?
Let’s work together with our towns and neighbors
to put solar panels on every roof.

  1. This is news ? Ok, I guess it is, even though it was not unexpected.
Fortunately, the heaviest rain occurred near the time of low tide.

          1. The climate has been changing for billions of years. Humans never have, nor ever will, be the cause of it. It’s incredibly silly , and arrogant, to think that we do. We are insignificant in the scope of everything.

          2. John, meteorites have the capacity to knock the earth off its axis. They have in the past. They might again in the future.
Never before in the history of our planet did we release as many chemicals into the atmosphere as we have the last 150 years.
Our society has massive evidence that humans have been causing damage to our atmosphere. Even the oil companies, especially the oil companies, know it.

          3. John, it’s interesting that some people have strong opinions about things they don’t understand. A few months ago I overheard a conversation between three men about how we (the US) had never landed a man on the moon. They argued that there is no way that we have enough technology to land on the surface of the moon and then lift back off again. It’s impossible. They got this wacky idea off a right-wing radio show. Two of the men graduated from high school with no further education and one had not graduated from high school. One of the problems with right-wing programming is that some of the people conservatives target, do not have enough education to know truth from fiction. Some low educated people think that algebra is a waste of time, when in reality algebra is a way of critical thinking in all areas of our lives.
Buzz Aldrin punched a man in the jaw for saying Aldrin hadn’t walked on the surface of the moon. When the man tried to sue Aldrin for assault, the judge threw the case out.

  2. 1970’s Water St. Black Dog Bakery. The electric outlets were shoulder high when I started working there. I wondered if they had always been that way. I think the building had been a Town Garage. CB Stark’s store still had a garage door. The dish sinks were up on a platform. The “throne” was up several steps, making it like an actual throne. We often worked in hip boot or waders. The flooding is nothing new. I have heard the area was built on fill. I wonder if anyone can verify that. Good thing we all had dingys.
