It looks like we’re in for a little February thaw with temperatures in the 40s most of the week. Bring it on, I say.
It has been a little brutal lately weather-wise. Many people are preparing to go on a trip and some have gone already. Noli and Isaac Taylor returned from visiting his parents in the Bahamas; they said they had a great time. And Jim and Kathy Newman will be returning this week from their three-week trip to India. I can’t wait to hear about that.
Tonight, there are two events at the library. The first at 4 pm is Corduroy the Bear who will be paying a visit. It’s really very cute. He came to the Chilmark Library over the weekend and if you missed it or your kid loved it so much, come to the Aquinnah Library and get your bear hug.
The second event will be the first meeting of the Book Group from 5:30 to 6:30. The book is “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann.
At the library next Thursday, Feb. 24 will be a read story and craft hour with fun snacks from 4 to 5 pm. Call or email the library for any and all details on these programs at 508-645-2314 or aquilib@vineyard.net.
Juli Vanderhoop passed this item on to me: the French Troubadours (of which her daughter, Ella, is a member) will be holding a fundraising dinner on Friday at 5 pm, for their trip to France. The dinner will be French-themed and will take place in the M.V. Regional High School cafeteria. Tickets are $12 per person and after the dinner you can stay and see the high school performance of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Tickets for that are sold separately.
The big news of the week however is that Anne Vanderhoop is turning 80. Yes, 80; she does not look it at all nor does she act it. I think perhaps making pies and being around all her children and grandchildren keeps her young. There will be a big party for her at the old Town Hall this Sunday from 2 to 6 pm. All are welcome. It is a potluck so bring a dessert or side dish. And please bring your memories, memorabilia, and stories of Anne. If you have some photos you would like to share please contact Lisa Vanderhoop at 508-645-3201. In lieu of gifts people can make donations to the First Baptist Church of Gayhead.
Saskia Vanderhoop will be hosting a program called Nature’s Nest on Sunday, Feb. 20 from 10 am to 12 noon for young children with a parent or caregiver. Suggested donation is $20 per child/parent pair or $30 per family. It really is a lot of fun and it wears your kid out, so maybe they will take a nap later.
Saskia’s next Women’s Circle will be Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 7 to 10 pm — tap into your inner knowing and connect through sisterhood. There is a suggested donation between $10 and $20. You can call Saskia at 508-645-2008 or email her at saskiav@mac.com.
