Ask Tom, the Dogcharmer: Dogs and radios

It's nice to leave some form of entertainment for a dog at home alone. – Courtesy Wikimedia Commons

Dear Dogcharmer,

When I leave my dog alone to go to work, I leave the radio on NPR, so it’s people talking and intelligent programming. I’m assuming leaving the radio on is more comforting to my dog than stone silence all day. Am I projecting, or does this help?

Thanks.

Christopher R.

Dear Christopher R.,NPR, with people talking, is definitely better than stone silence. But better than your dog listening to conversation is the sound of classical music, especially when played on a harpsichord. Some interactive toys wouldn’t hurt — the type where, by knocking the toy around, it occasionally releases a treat or two. Give him that toy or toys only when he’s left alone, to keep them more interesting.

Your dog may not show it, but I appreciate your trying to keep your four-legged one more comfortable in your absence.
