I am and always will be a fierce advocate of multiculturalism because I know the importance of immigrants to all nations. The 16th UEFA European Championship perpetuated my belief in this conviction, as the Portuguese Éderzito António Macedo Lopes (Éder), born in Guinea-Bissau, a tropical country on West Africa’s Atlantic coast which has Portuguese as its primary language, scored the winning goal for Portugal. I was also equally impressed with France’s team, a multiethnic and multireligious group. It was stunning to see two Romas (Gypsies) in the final: André-Pierre Christian Gignac, France, and Ricardo Andrade Quaresma Bernard, Portugal. In World War II, they were victims of genocide of the Nazis in what is known as the Porajmos. The Romas continue to be persecuted and humiliated to this day. What was even greater was that there was no terrorist attack on the tournament, despite the high risk. That is the thing about sports; it is a culmination of efforts to achieve goals that bring people together.
This past weekend was also a great weekend for women in sports. Serena Williams won at Wimbledon on Saturday, July 9, and on Sunday, July 10, the Brazilian volleyball team beat the United States and Amanda Nunes became the first mixed martial arts (MMA) Brazilian champion. Amanda won the women’s bantamweight belt in the early hours of Sunday, July 10, in Las Vegas.
Portugal’s title will likely make the Annual Portuguese Feast of the Holy Ghost that much more vibrant. The festivities will begin on Saturday, July 16, at 5 pm at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs, located at 137 Vineyard Avenue, with BBQ, DJ music, games, etc., and on Sunday, July 17, is the parade, which starts off at the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority and finishes at the Portuguese-American Club with Portuguese folklore dancers, Portuguese soup, games, and a live auction.
As part of the Oak Bluffs library’s significant efforts to extend their reach into the Brazilian community, they are presenting a workshop called DIY Bookbinding: Staples & Stiches. It’s an all-ages program, including adults, on July 14 from 5:30 to 7 pm. The event is an English/Portuguese bilingual event. This is the first time the library will offer a bilingual workshop, and the staff is very excited about it.
Don’t miss the opportunity to learn the basics of small book and ’zine binding, and share your results the next day at a Publishers Share and Swap. There will be a Book and Comic Making for Kids workshop from 10 to 11 am and a Book and Comic Making for Young Adults workshop from 2 to 4. Both of these events will focus on drawing, character design, and narrative development.
Saturday, July 16, is the Oak Bluffs Publishers Share and Swap from 1 to 3 pm, which will give everyone who made something over the prior days a chance to show off and maybe even trade for a copy of someone else’s.The program is co-taught by cartoonist and illustrator Laura Lannes and writer and comic artist Rachel Hays, and all workshops will be in English and Portuguese. You don’t have to live in Oak Bluffs, be a regular library patron, or have a library card to attend, and all workshops are free.
If you are looking for a great activity with the kids on Monday night, you must go to Featherstone Musical Mondays, an outdoor event from 6:30 to 8 pm. It is $10 for adults, $5 if you present your Island Club Card, which I wrote about it in the last column (bit.ly/islandcard), and for children under 14, the event is free.
Also for the kids, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival presents Cinema Circus on Wednesday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 27, which is a festival of fun from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. The kids will get to explore animation stations with iPads, do face painting, make their own music video, dress up, and so much more, and all of this is FREE.
Paulo Miranda, the owner of Island Fresh Pizza, the first Brazilian pizza shop on the Island, conquered another one of his dreams. After almost 14 years without seeing his mother and sister, they were finally able to come for a visit, and Paulo is trying to soak up every second of every minute with them.
If watching or reading the news lately has gotten you worried about what the future will look like, especially for our children, I would like to share a piece of advice that my grandmother often gave me: Spread kindness, always choose patience, and do for others what you would like others to do for the people you love the most. We all have a part in how the future will look, and now is the time to always choose patience, understanding, and kindness.
