Letters to the Editor

A gardening odyssey

My friend Judy is having an addition put on, so she offered me a lilac that was in the way.

Let’s start with the skunks

To the Editor:Living on Martha's Vineyard, most people here don't generally look with that much envy on the next atoll over, Nantucket, unless maybe if you're into Kerry-watching, prices at least as high as on the Cote d'Azur, and spring seasons where it's colder even than here.

Environmental abuse in pursuit of oil and gas

Hydraulic fracturing blasts oil and gas from tight shale rock more than a mile underground using a pressurized mixture of water, sand, and chemicals, to loosen petroleum-rich formations to get the oil and gas flowing to the surface.

The first part of this letter would have been e-mailed directly to the Oak Bluffs selectmen, but I couldn't find any place on the town's web site to send comments.

A primer on hearing aids

My thirty-five years of hearing impairment and wearing hearing aids does not make me an expert on either subject.

Rebutting the criticism of “fracking”

As a petroleum engineer, oil and natural gas producer, and summer resident of Tisbury, I felt compelled to respond to Peter Cabana's letter published October 14, regarding alleged pollution of ground water in Pennsylvania, as a result of a process known as hydraulic fracturing.

The value of controlled burns

This letter was written to Commissioner Rick Sullivan, state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Who’s disturbing the peace?

In response to the letter "Dirt Bikers spoil the peace, violate the laws" (

Tick questions

Eradicating the deer population seems too simple a solution to the tick problem (Letters to the Editor, Oct.

40B is not the housing solution

Yes, Martha's Vineyard does have an affordable housing problem, but retaining 40B is not the solution to this distressing situation.
